Madeleine & Salomon, c’est la rencontre de deux artistes aux univers musicaux bien affirmés : le pianiste et compositeur Alexandre Saada et la vocaliste et flûtiste Clotilde. Six ans après leur premier album remarqué, A Woman's Journey, le duo Madeleine & Salomon sort son deuxième album, Eastern Spring. Si ce nouvel album rend hommage à la pop orientale et militante des années 1960-1970, pépites pour la plupart inconnues en Occident, on y reconnaît certaines intonations du précédent consacré aux grandes figures féminines engagées de la chanson américaine.
Le minimalisme revendiqué du duo fonctionne à nouveau comme un charme, délivrant dans la puissance de la voix et de l'idée, la possibilité d'une musique qui démultiplie les infinies histoires que charrient les chansons du Maroc à la Turquie. En anglais et parfois en français, ils font écho aux questionnements existentiels, aux espoirs, aux contestations d'une jeunesse assoiffée de changement. Des chansons engagées, rêveuses ou romantiques, toutes porteuses des questionnements sociaux ou spirituels qui aujourd’hui encore résonnent à travers le monde.

Madeleine & Salomon have a knack for setting themselves bold challenges. Following their first opus A Woman's Journey – a homage to militant American songstresses from Nina Simone to Janis Joplin – Eastern Spring sees them tackle the shimmering repertoire of ‘60s/’70s Mediterranean folk-pop. Clotilde (vocals) and Alexandre (piano) take us to Beirut (Bendaly Family), Istanbul (Selda Bagcan), Rabat (Les Frères Mégri), Tel Aviv (Shalom Hanoch) and Cairo (Al Massrieen), performing songs that reflect these artists’ societies aiming towards emancipation through that mix of folk and psychedelic rock so popular in Western music at the time. Torn between two worlds, these songs find a natural home with Madeleine & Salomon: one voice, one piano, overlaid with daring effects and driven by a fascinating intensity.
